Plenty to do, and lots new pictures to take since I can’t even log into Planet Minecraft long enough to pull my pictures off.

Now, while many people that regularly dip into the “green,” “recycling,” and “natural”-foods and clothing circles will recognize the term–many others may not. Upcycling is the act or art of re-using a material in a completely different fashion than it may have originally been intended. You might recycle an old plastic bag again and again, but an upcycler might take that bag, weave in some recycled fabric, and “upcycle” it into a headband or bracelet. Old paper clips, metal cans and can tops, and bits of glass might be sanded down or linked together to make a bracelet or belt. You can upcycle old plastic bottles and cans into planters and pots for growing fruits and veggies in, even though or especially if they have holes!

I have always had a bit of a soft side for stuffed animals. Having made a few as a kid, I’m thinking of trying them on as a small job. So far I’d made a sock bunny from a discounted sock, when I was hit with the idea of using upcycled clothing and materials to make these stuffed animals out of!

A cute little sock bunny and a WAY too large prototype winged octopus!

(These are just prototypes–the octopi I sell will be a LOT smaller, and the bunnies will look nicer!)

I traipsed into Goodwill (after a failed attempt at finding used clothing at a vintage costume shop), and found some material gold! I got several tanktops, thin hoodies, and long dresses made from super soft materials–in all sorts of patterns! Mostly black and white in stripes, a few plaid, and one solid. Now, using clothing rather than socks will complicate my pattern by a little, but I was able to get QUITE a bit of clothing for just 35 bucks–and I’m thinking it may make as many as 12-15 animals!

Lots of new upcycled cloth to choose from!

(Up-and-coming stuffed animals will have adorable mis-match patterned limbs!)

Poll time! If you’ve ever purchased an artisan stuffed animal, or upcycled good, how much did you pay? What site did you use? Was it worth it? Would you do it again? For about 3+ hours of work (at just minimum wage), a certain amount for materials (which I am getting discounted and ‘sorta’ in bulk, unless they’re buttons and we already had a butt-load of ’em sitting around), and the design I’m using (which is my own)–I’m thinking of charging between 20 and 30 USD for each stuffed animal. So far I’ve only made a bunny–but I’m thinking I’ll do a few little winged octopi, a few frogs, and definitely more long bunnies.

Wish me luck!

Gijinka Gabumon Jacket

Gijinka (擬人化): Romaji characters for the Japanese word meaning “treating [anything nonhuman] like a human being”. (linkz)

Though it might be more accurate to simply call it a hoodie version of Gabumon’s jacket, I have decided to sew (by hand…stupid sewing machine.) a version of his jacket that I can cosplay in~ Yay!

When I first started, I’d hoped to buy a basic white hoodie and dye it a light blue color, add another set of arms, modify the hood, and add the dark blue stripes. But! No matter where I looked, I couldn’t on my life find a light blue OR white hoodie.

Next my plan was to make a basic hoodie from a pattern, modify the sleeves to be plush, add a second set of arms, and hand-draw the pattern for a custom hood. This plan fell through when the only pattern I could find (a McCalls) was nowhere to be found at Joanns.

My only other option was to find SOMETHING with 2 arms and a hood, and simply hope I could make it from fleece. I searched the entire sewing section for a suitable pattern, and I found it in a pajama top. I took the long sleeves, measured my own arms, and added stuffed paws at the top–and cut out the front and pack panels. Rather than a single layer of light blue, I lined the entire interior with white fleece. So far, all I’ve been able to do is cut out a second set of arms, and get a zipper for the front (which is way too small).

All I intend to do to finish it, is cut and sew a custom hood with eye holes and ears, add white vinyl teeth to the edge of the hood, sew and stuff the second set of arms, add purple vinyl claws to all 4 paws, add a zipper to the front, hem it, and cut and sew on a set of dark blue stripes. So far I’ve spent nearly 50 hours on the thing, and I think I have about that to go!

I’ll probably fix up these images later–maybe take them again after I shower, but for now–you get to see the real me. w00t.

Gabumon Jacket 1

This is the top of the jacket, nothing special.

Gabumon Jacket 2

This is the front of the jacket, paws out in front.

Gabumon Jacket 3

This is the top of the sleeve–I’m trying to figure out how I might smooth over that stitched line.

Gabumon Jacket 4

This is the bottom of the sleeve–kinda cool. I was able to line the outside with light blue, the inside with white, and use this to help stuff them.

Gabumon Jacket 5

This is a quick pic to show that I put finger slots in both paws, so I can bend the paw around. Kinda cool.

This is still heavily in-progress, so–the next time I make major progress you’ll see it! Stay tuned!

Minecraft Projects so far…

Yay, Minecraft!

For those of you living under a rock in a far-off distant land, Minecraft is an open-sandbox game where you can build or craft almost anything you can imagine.

Want to recreate your old school, to show your friends?

Want to recreate Sleeping Beauty’s castle?

No problem!

What I chose to do with Minecraft, is build areas of interest from many types of media–TV, Anime, and Video Games (to name a few).

Project #1 –
-Lyoko (Code Lyoko)

Anyone who has seen the show will immediately know what I’m talking about. That 4 (spoilers: 5)-sector world filled with dangerous monsters and super-powered teens! Between the Forest, Ice, Desert, and Mountain sectors–I have my work cut out for me! Each sector will have its’ own individual level, high enough off the ground to make a player re-spawn if they fall. Way-towers will reach from one level to the next, allowing one to travel between sectors just like in the show. And if that wasn’t enough, I’m working on a custom texture pack for it! Quick, to the way-tower!

Project #2 –
-Tartarus (Persona 3)

One of my favorite game-series’ of all time, Persona is both a total mind-blow and extremely fun. You fight Shadows, manifestations of the dark-side in everything, with your Persona, the mask you take on life with, in a secret hour between this day and the next; The Dark Hour. What starts off as 5 high school students quickly grows, as a mystery unfolds. Tartarus, the hulking 250+ level constantly-changing labyrinth is what stands in the beloved Gekkoukan High’s place. And to top off the eeries mood, I’m making a custom texture pack for it–complete with glowing green moon!

Project #3 –
-Junes + TV World (Persona 4)

Another project from one of my favorite games of all time, Junes is the bustling new addition to Inaba’s countryside. What was once a small arcade and a few mom-and-pop shops is now a 2-story shopping complex, complete with grocery and clothing store. What our Heroes didn’t realize, was that the largest TV in the electronics section was big enough to fall into! Armed with their trusty Personas, they embark on a journey to save victims that have been dumped into a twisted TV-world!

Project #4 –

The happiest place on earth! This massive 2-part theme park is a true wonder to behold. Hundreds of shops, restaurants, and rides dot 8 different areas of the main park, and I intend to re-create them all! From the roller-coaster Thunder Mountain, to the water-ride Splash Mountain, to the in-the-dark roller coaster Space Mountain, and everything in between!

And don’t worry, future updates will include plenty of photos!
